Michigan Bridge Care

A True “Medicare for All Who Want It” Program

What is Bridge Care?

With hundreds of thousands of Michiganders who are uninsured or underinsured, now is the time to bridge the heath care gap Michigan. Michigan Bridge Care would be a revolutionary, statewide healthcare reform program. Bridge Care is a state government backed, semi-subsidize, opt in, optional healthcare framework proposal. The program would give a majority of hard-working Michiganders a different option for affordable, quality health insurance via a paid Medicare system, while simultaneously protecting third-party healthcare options for people who are satisfied with their current healthcare. The program also tackles out of control insurance premiums and prescription drug costs.

Who would be eligible for insurance through Bridge Care?

There are three major groups when it comes to health insurance in Michigan:

  1. People who are eligible for Medicare or Medicaid.
  2. Those in the middle. This group includes people who might not be eligible for health insurance via work or are suffering from sky high premiums and absurd copays.
  3. People who have health insurance, are happy with the coverage they have, and don’t want to lose it under a Medicaid for all program.

Insurance through Bridge Care would “bridge the gap” between group 1 and group 3 providing a Medicare for all who want it, opt in program. Any working Michigander would be able to opt into the program and obtain insurance via the Bridge Care program. Proof of Michigan residency for the past twelve consecutive months would be required to enroll in the program.

Who will pay for it?

NO NEW TAXES FOR THE MIDDLE CLASS OR BELOW

While the Bridge Care program is a semi-subsidized healthcare program, the program is committed to making sure the middle class or below will not see any tax revenue taken from their taxes and would see no finical repercussion at all, unless they are enrolled in the program. The cost of the program would be invoiced as followed:

While the Bridge Care program is a semi-subsidized healthcare program, the program is committed to making sure the middle class or below will not see any tax revenue taken from their taxes and would see no finical repercussion at all, unless they are enrolled in the program. The cost of the program would be invoiced as followed:

  • The insurance premiums would be income based. Participants of the program would pay 5.25% of their monthly income as a premium for the program. This approach would make the monthly cost of the program vary based on the income of the enrollee.
  • The level of coverage would be the same for each enrollee regardless of the amount they pay via the income based premium.
  • Individuals whose adjusted gross income from the previous tax year was $150,000 or more would see a .75% increase in their state income tax.
  • Enrollees who are self-employed, or who do not bring home regular paychecks, will be billed monthly based on the adjusted gross income of their previous year’s tax return.

What other issues are addressed in the program?

  • The program would introduce legislation that would put a cap on prescription drug cost so drug companies would not be allowed to sell prescriptions in Michigan at a price per unit of more than a certain percentage of the cost to manufacture the drug.
  • An effort would be brought forth to make the program available at a reduced or waived fee to enrolled college students between the ages of 18-24 whose parents are not eligible for dependent healthcare coverage.
  • All providers operating in the state would be required to accept Bridge Care as a form of insurance.
